Message from the President

Dr Nigel Lockett

Dear ISBE Members,

I am delighted to be writing this article as the new President of ISBE - thank you all for your support, encouragement and congratulations it was greatly appreciated!  I thought I would take this opportunity to set out my hopes for ISBE over the next two years. However before doing so I wanted to pay tribute to Colette’s excellent stewardship during this phase of immense change and growth at ISBE – thank you.

Over the past two years ISBE has been through a transformation with many addition services and opportunities being developed for our members and a new operational structure. As incoming President I'm determined to continue to build the value, scope and relevancy of ISBE for our members drawing on my previous experience as a successful entrepreneur and my more recent academic roles at Lancaster, Brunel and Bradford.

During my term of presidency I would like ISBE become the first point of contact for policy-makers, practitioners, research councils, the media and small business associations seeking evidence-based contributions. I believe that ISBE members can provide robust, valuable and independent insights into critical social and economic challenges faced by our society. We need to provide the services that enable you to build your networks and ensure your contributions have maximum impact.

To enable this vision I am hoping to fulfil the following aims over the next two years:

1. To ensure members feel connected to the institute and to maximise the  value they get from their membership.
2. To promote ISBE’s distinctive research-focused profile and reputation for evidence-based contributions to policy-makers, practitioners, research councils and small business associations and raise our profile amongst key organisations in our field.
3. To build on the launch of the Enterprise Alliance UK to promote entrepreneurship education and to ensure the views of our member are heard alongside those of Enterprise Educators UK and NACUE at the highest levels.
4. To continue the RAKE fund to finance research projects in the field of Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
5. To continue to uphold the excellent reputation of the ISBE annual conference which provides cutting edge research, high level workshops, lively panel debates and thought provoking key note speakers as well as excellent opportunities for networking. This year’s event will be hosted in London and for 2011 Yorkshire and the Humber.
6. To increase the number of opportunities for members to get involved including the introduction of a strong programme of regional and national events and  the provision of additional opportunities for sharing knowledge and networking.

To kick start my presidency I would like to invite you, our members, to let us know what you would like to see us doing as we go forward and to let us know how ISBE can better service you.

I’d now like to welcome you to my first edition of Enterprising Matters. With five hundred members from over 50 different countries and with an increasing number of papers at the ISBE Conference having an international focus it was only going to be a matter of time before the key theme for an edition would be on Internationalisation. This edition touches on a wide range of important subjects in this field including a hot debate on the value of UK and Chinese Partnerships, a case study on innovative young company BrewDog PLC, pieces looking at social enterprise, business incubation and education all from an international perspective and much more.

I look forward to working with you all,

Nigel
