Faced with the on-going down turn within the Western economies it would appear that more than ever an enterprising agenda is required to promote sustainable growth to reverse the decline in the standard of living that people have been experiencing. At both the UK and Scottish levels it is argued that small businesses can play a key role in reversing the current economic decline.
This one day work-shop seeks to determine whether policy makers have the agenda to achieve this aim, and, if not, to identify what needs to be done to promote entrepreneurial activity which can assist in growing the economy in a sustainable way. The current Westminster agenda seeks to ‘modernise’ the state and to promote ‘third sector organisations’ in an attempt to promote growth.
The workshop begins by examining recent policy regarding the promotion of Enterprise within Scotland, which is timely given that it is almost 20 years since the launch of the Business Birth Rate Strategy in 1993. The next section seeks to gain the views of ‘civic society’ in terms of how an ‘Enterprising Scotland’ Agenda may be regarded by other stakeholders.
The afternoon has two parallel sessions, one focuses on key themes emerging within entrepreneurial education and transferability of these skills to business settings; the other focuses on the impact ‘space’ in terms of Enterprise developments, whether this be in terms of ‘Thought’, dynamics such as rurality or character in terms of the make-up of businesses for regional development.
