The proposed collection – ‘Beyond Sustainability – Democratic, Restorative and Regenerative Enterprise and Entrepreneurship in Practice’ – will support educators with a timely collection of compact cases for the classroom.
The recent #COP30 wasn’t much cop, with fewer CEOs than previously…but we know that there are businesses out there now which are modelling the sort of enterprise and entrepreneurship that society and the planet need. At this stage, all that is needed is the name of the author/s, the name of the proposed compact case and the proposed chapter title.
Compact cases are relatively short – 4 – 6 pages – and illuminate interesting aspects of the entrepreneurial experience, for example, business models, getting started, funding, marketing and communication, perspectives on growth, important challenges and pivots, and choices which maintain a distinct social and ecological business purpose.
Cases are sought from *around the world* to demonstrate global involvement in these particular business types. Chapters will feature reflective questions, references, further reading and 1-2 learning activities.
The compact cases will be categorised according to the type of entrepreneurial organising: democratic, restorative and regenerative. In each section, chapters will explore issues, events, challenges and decisions and the illuminate the relationship between the types of business and human and planetary flourishing.
- Democratic enterprise and entrepreneurship – this is entrepreneurial organising which emphasises democratic ownership and decision making. We are interested in enterprises and entrepreneurship where cooperative ownership has re-distributed power, improved material and social conditions and provides a model for more equitable and dignified work.
- Restorative enterprise and entrepreneurship – this is entrepreneurial organising that prioritises repairing social or environmental harm, fostering positive and more-than-human relationships and building supportive communities to underpin purpose.
- Regenerative enterprise and entrepreneurship – this is entrepreneurial organising that goes beyond sustainability, beyond circularity and aims to actively enhance eco-systems and communities. Instead of merely minimising harm, regenerative business aims to create positive gains for social and ecological systems.
Compact cases are based on real businesses but can be compiled from secondary data. If there is a democratic, restorative or regenerative business that you would like to bring to classrooms please DM your email address for a link to the google form to propose a case and chapter title.
