ISBE Minority Entrepreneurship and Creative Industries Entrepreneurship’s SIG Doctoral Symposium 2024

Theme: ‘Off the Need for Auto-Ethnography, Reflexivity, Positionality, and Interview Participant Reportability in Qualitative Research’

We are delighted to extend an invitation to you for our upcoming doctoral symposium, titled ‘Auto-Ethnography and Interview Participant Report-ability in Qualitative Research’. This workshop is jointly organised by the Creative Industries and the Entrepreneurship in Minority Special Interest Groups. At the heart of this event is our commitment to promoting best practices in data collection approaches. On our part, we recognise that some qualitative collection methods are defined by essential tensions and overwhelming hesitations. As a result, our goal is to clarify how various approaches can be effectively applied by students interested in qualitative research.

In this light, we are interested in three richly distinct but related interactive sessions:

(a) Session One: Auto-ethnography, Insider Perspective, Reflexivity, and Positionality

This session one locates the use of Auto-ethnography, Insider Perspective, Reflexivity, and Positionality as genuine pieces of investigatory evidence. The session offers robust perspectives on why these methodological strategies are critical. This will include exploring some of the inherent assumptions and emphasising how they uniquely position one’s findings effectively.

(b) Session Two: Reportability and Interview Participant Selection

In this context, we aim to concentrate our understanding of the utility of reporting and justifying the number of interview participants chosen within doctoral studies. Acknowledging differences across guidelines, we draw on empirical data from 52 in-depth interviews to operationalise commitment justifications regarding non-probabilistic sample sizes for qualitative interviews.

(c) Doctoral students attending are asked to please prepare a brief presentation, limited to a maximum of five slides, providing an overview of your research methods and challenges. You will be allotted a presentation slot of 5-10 minutes (depending on the number of participants), with an opportunity to discuss your approach and receive feedback in a supportive and positive environment.
