ISBE member Adrian Ashton was invited by Enterprise Nation to lead a session in their ongoing ‘lunch and learn’ series, on the topic of how small business owners who are also unpaid carers can best approach balancing the competing demands of these roles.
Drawing on various published researches, interviews, and lived experiences, the session highlighted the various ways in which a current lack of recognition or policy for businesses in these circumstances are unduly limiting their potential to create new jobs, retain existing talent, and prevents them contributing an additional minimum of £10bn GDP to the wider economy each year.
The session transpired to be one of the most engaged with, in the wider Lunch and Learn series, through the extent to which it saw participating entrepreneurs sharing their own stories and interacting with each other through it, for mutual benefit and encouragement.
It also generated several unexpected outcomes, including the identification that a valid strategy would be to ‘hide in the toilet’.
