Adrian Ashton has published his latest annual impact report, which includes consideration for total impacts created over a continuous 20-year period.
Over the last 20 years, ISBE member Adrian Ashton has produced annual impact reports on himself as a sole trader consultant – not with a focus on clients or projects delivered, but on how his business model works.
The report maps and evidences how one-person and micro-enterprise businesses are contributing to the UK Government’s Social Value Model; the UN Sustainable Development Goals; local economic resilience; carbon reduction; and skills development (often at levels greater than might be otherwise expected).
It also highlights the costs to entrepreneurs and the wider economy when national policy overlooks different business communities – the report details how, over the last year, Adrian’s business has had to decline nearly £20,000 in work, reduce pro bono support, and turn down invitations to contribute to national conversations; because the nearly 1 million sole traders and small business who are also unpaid carers (like him) lack access to any recognition or support in reconciling and managing the demands of these roles.
As this report marks its 20th consecutive publication, Adrian has also reflected on the total aggregated impacts created over this 20-year period – possibly the first time any such UK business has undertaken to report on such a scope of continuous activity.
The framework he has developed for these reports has been recognised by the Institute of Social Value, and Social Value International – but he is always keen to explore reflections on it with fellow ISBE members working in economic development, social value, inclusive entrepreneurship, and unpaid carer policy.
