ISBE is very pleased to announce that Professor Robert (Bob) Newbery has been appointed Deputy President with effect from 31st January 2025. Bob will take up the position of ISBE President after the next ISBE Annual General Meeting at this year’s conference in Glasgow 5th-6th November.
Bob was appointed to the ISBE Board on 28 September 2023 and has made a great contribution since joining. Outside of ISBE he is a Professor of Entrepreneurship and Head of the Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Strategy department at Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University. He has worked extensively in Asia, Africa, Europe and North America and has founded and run a number of entrepreneurial businesses having a PhD, MSc, MBA and BSc.
He is co-editor of the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research. He Chaired the 2019 Institute of Small Business and Enterprise (ISBE) conference in Newcastle (with 500+ delegates). His research interests are focused on international entrepreneurship, particularly in developing contexts, with publications in the Journal of Business Venturing and other highly ranked journals. He is a founder member of the Enterprise Education Foundation East Africa network (EEFEA). He is currently conducting research into the entrepreneurial experiences of people operating in ‘peripheral’ communities.
On his appointment as Deputy President, Bob comments ‘I am delighted to step up to the Deputy President role and I look forward to working with colleagues and the broader ISBE community.’

Bob has been a great supporter to the Institute for many years and I look forward to working with him over my remaining period as President. Together, we will continue to develop ISBE’s support for researchers and practitioners in the field of entrepreneurship and small business, assisting them in putting research into policy and practice’.
