Professor David Storey

David Storey, OBE, was Professor at the Department of Business Management and Economics at University of Sussex, UK. He had a First Class Degree in Economics, a Diploma in Applied Statistics and a PhD in Economics. He had two honorary Doctorates.

His work focussed on public policy, access to finance and the survival and non-survival of new firms. It was based upon large-scale panels of new enterprises – most notably in conjunction with Barclays Bank and was published in all the leading Entrepreneurship and Small Business journals.

Hans Landstrom et al in Research Policy 2012 reports that David Storey was the highest ranked non-US scholar in Entrepreneurship. His book Understanding the Small Business Sector, published in 1994, was in ninth place overall in the Entrepreneurship “core works” and remains the most frequently cited work on Small Business according to Google Scholar.

In 1998 he received the International Award for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Research from the Swedish Council and was awarded a Wilford White fellowship in 2008.

He has acted as consultant to the UK government as well as those of Australia, New Zealand, Denmark and Sweden. He collaborated with the World Bank in producing an enterprise plan for Malaysia. He produced for OECD in 2008 a Handbook on SME policy evaluation and was co-author of a report on enterprise in the Middle-East and North Africa (MENA) region and on Mexico, both in 2013.  In 2016 he advised Eurofound in their review “Start-up support for young people in the EU”.
