Professor McAdam’s research is situated within the area of entrepreneurship having a particular expertise with regards to the influence of gender upon women’s entrepreneurship, high technology business incubation and family business. Her early research interests were developed in response to a curiosity regarding the development of entrepreneurial clusters, incubators and networking. Professor McAdam has extensive experience of enabling and participating successfully in both regional and international entrepreneurial ecosystems, as a result of well-established research networks in the UK, Ireland, EU, New Zealand, US and the Middle East, spanning a career of over 20 years. In her career to date she has produced over 60+ journal articles; 9 book chapters; 4 books, 100+ conference papers which have had significant impact in terms of academic metrics (over 8100 citations, h-index 39, i10-index 63). For the last four consecutive years she has been ranked amongst the top 2% of scientists in the world for research impact, by a study led by Stanford University which ranks scientists across the world, based on a composite citation index from the Scopus database.
Professor McAdam has extensive networks of colleagues and stakeholders spanning across research and practitioner communities. The nominee is an active researcher in the Entrepreneurship discipline both in the UK and globally. Professor McAdam is recognised as an expert in entrepreneurship particularly with regard to female entrepreneurship, family business and entrepreneurial ecosystems. The nominee regularly contributes research to the ISBE conference and contributes to the wider ISBE research community. Professor McAdam regularly encourages her doctoral students to attend ISBE events and regularly supports symposia and other events. Professor McAdam would be an excellent ambassador for ISBE in future years and a great individual to draw upon and mentor other academics within the ISBE society.
As noted previously Professor McAdam has established international and national networks with a range of organisation and bodies that would potentially be of value to ISBE including the Royal Irish Academy.Professor McAdam is on the editorial boards of leading UK and US journals such as the International Small Business Journal, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and the International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship.
