University of Manchester publishes paper exploring student entrepreneurship

At the University of Manchester, we have just published a paper which explains a novel data warehouse methodology where several sources of internal and external data have been used to collect and clean data on student businesses. This ranges from demographic and financial data to intellectual property and can be linked to any entrepreneurship education activities students may have partaken in whilst at university. From the 288 student companies first identified at our institution, there are some interesting observations, for example, innovation-related activity is high with 7.0% of ventures having filed for patents, exceeding the UK average of 1.6%. 10% are social enterprises, 90% operate in the services sector, and the three-year survival rate for these student businesses considerably exceeds the UK average.
