Why ISBE Members Need to Make the Oceans a Strategic Priority

The world’s oceans cover 71% of the planet and underpin the stability of our climate, our food systems, and critically our economic environments. August 2026 saw global sea‑surface temperatures reach a record high which is a stark reminder that ocean change is accelerating. Millions of metric tonnes of waste clog the ocean with up to 12 million more tonnes of plastic entering the seas annually, much of it single‑use items that fragment into microplastics and then enter the human food chain.
ISBE members need to be aware that these trends are not abstract environmental concerns because they actually shape market stability, supply chains and consumer expectations. Warmer oceans intensify storms, disrupt rainfall patterns and increase business‑critical risks across logistics, insurance and infrastructure. Rising acidity and declining marine biodiversity threaten fisheries, coastal tourism and food‑related sectors, while the growing public focus on sustainability is reshaping purchasing behaviour across most industries.
Entrepreneurial firms are uniquely positioned to respond. By reducing waste, making ocean‑friendly choices and innovating around circular‑economy principles, small companies can both mitigate environmental harm and strengthen their competitive advantage. If we all take small actions such as cutting single‑use plastics, disposing of waste responsibly and being mindful when making purchases, we can together have a meaningful impact. For ISBE members, ocean stewardship is not just about environmental responsibility, as it should now also be a strategic priority.
